TWO-WAY RADIO
POWER BOARD'S PLANS EQUIPMENT FOR TRUCKS In an effort to obtain more expeditious service in the repair of faults in the electricity supply system, the Auckland Electric-power Board has practically completed its preliminary investigations for fitting its trucks with twoway radio apparatus. By this means, it is planned to have tho trucks equipped so that the outside staff can keep in constant communication with the board's city office, from which instructions will 'be sent regarding urgent work. Discussing the position yesterday, the general manager of the board, Mr. R. H. Bartlcy, said that extensive preliminary investigations had been carried out with portable radio apparatus at various points in the board's area of 31S square miles. Results had been highly encouraging and overseas experts from one of the leading wireless firms would shortly visit Auckland to tour the district and give the board final advice on the most suitable equipment and system of operation. " No plant has been fitted up yet," Mr. Hartley said. " All we have done is to make the preliminary tests. These have been as comprehensive as possible and once the service is established it should prove of very material assistance in the board's activities." Mobile units in two-way radio telephone systems arc being increasingly used overseas and, according to reports, have resulted in considerable saving of time and increased efficiency. The units are widely used in connection with ambulance and police work.
