FIFTY YEARS AGO
WESTERN LOOP LINE PLAN The heavy volume of traffic using the single railway line out of Auckland through the Domain tunnel was causing concern in the city fifty years ago and to relieve- the congestion a loop line via Freeman's Bay and New toil had been suggested. Interested citizens waited upon the Minister of Justice, the Hon. .T. . A. Tole, to obtain liis support and the following extract from the Xkw Zkat.and Hkrat.d of January 7, ISS7, explains the Minister's attitude toward the proposal—"The members of the deputation la' l ' their views on the western loop line via Freeman's Bay and Newton bet ore the Minister and asserted their belief that the line was the best method ot relieving the congested, traffic on the present single line out of AucklandPlans for the proposed loop line were submitted for Mr. Tole's inspection, these being intended to show that the line would be more useful and lc sS expensive than any alternative route. "The Minister replied that there were various aspects of the question which would have to be con side Tet, for instance, cost' and reproductiveiiess. The western'loop • line would have to he dealt with, not only on its merits, but in conjunction with the projected widening of the Domain tunnel, and the proposed eastern loop line by way 0 Hobson's Bay and lower Heniuera. > ll Minister promised to submit the ,ie "- of the deputation to the Ministei o Public Works as the question one for his departhicnt. to deal with.
