value for Life-saving PRESENTATION TO PIHA CLUB Two hollow* Hawaiian surf boards, the gift of Mr. 0. A. Whitney, of Remuera, were presented to representatives of the Piha Surf Club yesterday by Mr. W. T. Matthews, of Heme Bay. Mr. Whitney, ' who recently returned ! from a visit to Honolulu with admira- | t.ion for the effectiveness of the laree j hollow board as life-saving equipment, i intends to present a third board, which | is to be designed and constructed in | Auckland by Mr. Matthews. The latter j is well known for his skill at model yacht building, i The president of the Piha Club. Mr. F. E.. de Guerrier. the secretary, Mr. C. R. Holt, and the club captain. Mr. H. C. Sidford. were present officially to receive the boards on behalf of the club. In making the presentation on liehalf of Mr. Whitney, Mr. Matthews said -that the Piha Club would be the first in the Dominion to use the hollow type of board. He added that the donor's idea was that they might be used for the saving of lives ami that demonstrations should he given with them wherever possible throughout New Zealand, in the hope that similar equipment would be adopted on every beach. Mr. de Guerrier said that it gave the club much pleasure to accept the boards, adding that the club's deep appreciation of such an enthusiastic, gesture would he expressed to Mr.. Whitney. Mr. Sidford said that the prominent position of the club was further enhanced by this addition to its life-sur-ing equipment. In addition to the surf boards, an instructional handbook was also presented. 011 behalf of the donor, by Mr. Matthews.
