Tiiero was a fairly large crowd present. in (lie semi-finals of the combined doubles Coonibe and Miss Nii bolls bad no difficulty with Cant and Miss Gould, the last-named being below standard. Cant was steady, but unable to cope with the man-like play of Miss Niclmlls. Coonibe was content to take things easily. The second semi-final was an exciting match. Guiin and Miss M. Hoverley in the first set led I—o, s—l, and 7 —(3, but lost 7—9. This set was well within the reach of the Aucklanders, who grew timid at the end. The second set went easily to Guiin and his partner, Miss Poolo being erratic at the net, whereas Miss Beverley and Gunn were both steady. In the final set Gunn had the odd game lead until s—l. Guuu held two match points at B—7, but missed, and Roussell led 9 —B. Gunn hit three service aces to even. Alter an exciting next two games, in which Roussell was prominent at. the net and Miss J'oole steadier, the latter pair won a, bright match, 11—9. Miss Beverley played well, although she was not so effective as Miss Poolo at the net. Roussell was more steady than Gunn, but not so brilliant. Gunn gave a pleasing display, using his head and good tactics. He and .\iiss Beverley were good losers and a popular pair. Heavy rain set in at one o'clock and it was still raining hard nt seven to-night. Play had to be postponed until to-morrow, when there is little likelihood of matches taking placd in the morning.
