TAXI SERVICE
COMPLAINTS TO COUNOIL DRIVING AND FARES A number of complaints of speeding, inconsiderate driving and overcharging by taxi-drivers during the holiday period have been made to the City Council, and further cases of allegedly reckless driving have been reported by the council's inspectors. All the crcmplaints and charges nre to be dealt with shortly by the legal and by-laws committee of the council. The chairman of the committee, Mr. \V. T. Anderton, said yesterday that he had personally investigated two cases which appeared to be flagrant. 'I he council, in his opinion, was in duty bound to take a serious view of the matter, especially where there was reason to believe that passengers who entrusted their safety to taxi-drivers had been exposed to unnecessary risks. Three weeks ago the council had issued a notice to the taxi organisations, informing tlmm that the speed limit of 30 miles an hour and all the other requirements of the law must be strictly observed. It would be for the committee to say whether action should bo taken against any of the men concerned, either by prosecution or by the suspension or cancellation of their licences. The managers of two taxi companies stated yesterday that in spite of the number of cars on the road during the holidays and the large mileage covered they had received no complaints whatever from the public in regard to either driving or fares charged. Their instructions to their drivers were in harmony with the by-laws and traOic regulations, and every effort was made to see that they were observed.
