Black, for the part three years chief postmaster at Palmerston North, retired on superannuation on Thursday after 40 years' service niti the Post arid Telegraph Department. Professor B. J. Marples, who haj been appointed to the chair of biology at the University of Otago, is to leave London by the Arawa on January 21. He will take up his duties on March 1. Captain G. R. Thompson, officer in charge of the Newton* corps of the (salvation Army, has been appointed to command the Wellington City corps. He will be succeeded by Adjutant J, Mahaffie, of Dunedin. The Rev. F. W. Winton, who was recently inducted as minister of the Presbyterian Church at Lawrence, Otago', has been granted the degree of bachelor of divinity by the Melbourne College of Divinity. Mr. A. L. Armstrong, principal assistant to the Colonial Secretary of Fiji, who has been on a six months' holiday visit to Britain, arrived at Auckland by the Narkunda on Saturday. With Mrs. Armstrong, he will await the arrival of the Niagara to return to Suva.. Mr. E. C. Cox, who recently retired from the position of traffic manager of the Southern Railway, England, arrived at Auckland by the Narkunda on Saturday. With Mrs. Cox he will upend a month in New Zealand and will visit the North and South Islands before returning home by way of Australia,. Mr. A. M. Kilgour, who has been manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia at Timaru for the last six and a-half years, has been notified of his appointment to a similar position at Swan Hill. Victoria. He will be succeeded by Mr. W. D. Olney, recently manager of the bank at PalmerstflD North.
