IRRIGATION SCHEME
WAITAKI-OAMARU AREA The area between the Waitnki hydro-electric station and Oamaru is tho possible field for a new irrigation scheme. This advice was received from Mr. D. Barnes, MP., when inquiries were made in Teinuka. The possibility of irrigating this area was discussed at Duntroon recently, when Mr. T. G. Heck, resident engineer to the Public Works Department at Temuka, at the invitation of Mr. Barnes, outlined the problems of irrigation to farmers of tho district and agreed to make a report on the question. The question was one of expense, Mr. Barnes said. The farmers desired to have their land irrigated, and there could be no doubt that the soil, which was very dry in that region, would respond well. The question warranted a fuller investigation, and this investigation would be made at a later date, when Mr. Beck's report had been completed and considered. He did not, as yet, feel inclined to say more than that the investigation would be made, the question of expenso considered, and the feasibility of tho plan discussed.
