INVENTOR'S DEATH

MR. ERNEST GODWARD AUTHORITY ON ENGINES [BY TET-.EGKAPII —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Monday The death occurred at sea on Thursday of Mr. Ernest Robert Godward, inventor and engineer, formerly of Lnvorcargill, in his 69th year. He was journeying to Invercargill at the time of his death, which happened when tho ship in which he was travelling was oft Gibraltar. Mr. Godward was a Londoner by birth and went to sea at a very early age. He settled in Dunedin as a young man and there made a name for himself in the world of athletics. It was as an inventor, however, that most prominence came his way. Ho entered the cycle business in Invercargill and produced several minor inventions.

The greatest achievement of Mr. Godward was tho inventing of an economiser for gas engines. At the time his invention was hailed by the engineering world and ho was sought by many of tlio world's leading engineers. As a result of his research ho was ablo to give an impetus to scientific engineering and he was offered and accepted an important position in New York.

During the pnst 20 yonrs Mr. Godward spent most of his time in the United States, where he was recognised as one of tho leading authorities on internal combustion engines.
