SATUIt DAY'S MEETING TE AWAMUTU CUP CONTEST GOOD PERFORMERS ENGAGED . FLYING HANDICAP FIELD
BY ARCHER
Considerable interest is being manifested iu the Waipa Racing Club's meeting at To Awaniutu on Saturday, and the prospects for a successful gathering are bright. The various events linvc filled well and fine weather is all that should bo required to ensure some excellent racing. The presence of a number of Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap Candidates will lend a great deal of interest to the principal races and the form will be closely watched. The win and place system of betting will be in operation and tho first race is timed to start at 11.45 a.m. A special train will leave Auckland for To Awaliiutu at 0.55 a.m.
A good held of ten is carded for the principal event, the To Awaniutu Cup, and the issue appears very open. A slow beginner like Master Lriorly may not be entirely suited by the course, although ho is well and likely to be running on at tho finish. Jonathan has been racing below form and does not appear to be as good as formerly. However, he is coming down in tho weights and is by no means a forlorn hope, as lie did u little better in his races at the Takapuna meeting than in his earlier ones this season. It would bo only a matter of Jonathan striking his old form to make it extremely difficult for the others. Mazir has been racing consistently well and can bo relied upon for a good effort even though he has slb. moro than when ho ran second at his last start. Last Year's Winner
Last year's winner Scotland lias shown improved form this season, but he has 141b. more than when he won twelve months ago, and is now in fi position where it is not easy. Dark Shadow is one of the most improved horses racing and 011 top of his win in the Waikato Cup with 7.7 he ran a good second with 5.4 to Royal Appellant, fcf.9, in tho Hamilton Handicap, one mile. Dark Shadow's early brilliance should be a factor in his favour, and lie is sure to have many admirers. Sinking Fund is another with ability to secure a forward position early and he should run a solid race. Prince Colossus recently displayed a return to winning form by accounting for the Alison Cup, but he has 101b. more 011 this occasion and will require to reproduce his best to win. So far this season Mungatoon has failed to score, but he gave indications at Iris last start that ho was returning to form and it is on the cards that h*> may take a hand in tho finish, as ho is nicely placed with 7.11. Tradesman, who has another engagement in the Paterangi Handicap, has recorded several very, creditable performances lately, and a repetition of tho form 110 revealed in finishing third in the Alison Cup 6hould make him difficult to beat. Lornacre has been racing attractively in hack company, and he is an improver likely to make a prominent showing, aVtAiough he has yet to prove his worth over a middle distance. However, he has shown that he can run a mile well and he may manage the extra distance successfully. It is probable that fancies will take a wide range if the weather remains fine and the track is good and some who may be in demand are Dark Shadow, Lorhacre and Mazir.
The Sprint Contest Some smart sprinters figure in the Flying Handicap and most of the candidates, have recent form to recommend them. The top-weight Galilee is very consistent, and she can be relied upon for a good effort upon her home track even though she is burdened with 9..']. Adalene has run several good races lately, and Star Artist was successful ix'v the spring meeting at Ellerslie. Mucgacrfl is handily placed and Tonnerre is very smart when fit. Enge does not appear to be as good as when he was winning last season, and Solaria did not do as well as anticipated at Te llapa, although he is capable of a sound performance on his day. The performance of Sweet Ilose in winning the Pupuke Plate was attractive and if she shows the dash she did on that occasion she is likely to make it very difficult for the others. On his third to Impasto and Tybalt at Ellerslie recently, Johnny Walls should have a good chance if started. However, ho is,also in tho Kihikihi Hack Handicap and no announcement has been mado as to which race he is likely to contest. did well enough at his last start to indicate that he might return to form. A reproduction of his best would make him very dangerous with the minimum. Mangukaha is on the improve and may run a solid race, although there are others whoso chances appeal more. The favourites may include Galilee, Sweet Poso and Mungacrc.
