KOWHAI SCHOOL GALA

VARIED PROGRAMME PAGEANT OF INDUSTRY Figure marching to music, ambulance drill and a pageant of Auckland's manufacturing industries, wore among the attractions at the Kouhai School gala, which was opened by Mr. W. T. Anderton, M.P., in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the rainy conditions, many parents and friends attended to watch the displays staged by the pupils. Tho gala was in aid of school funds. Besides the programme of outdoor events there were also excellent exhibits of general work done by tho pupils arranged in the various class rooms. Samples of the work done in tho wood and metal working classes, and some outstanding art work, also attracted much attention. Other attractions of the gala were brightly decorated stalls conducted by the pupils, who sold sweets, flowers and other articles.

The programme opened -,vit)i .1 display of ambulance drill by St. John Ambulance Brigade cadets, who demonstrated how to deal with various* accidents. This was followed by a fine demonstration of figure marching to music. Nearly half the pupils of the school took part, marching steadily and performing complicated movements without a mistake. Perhaps, the most interesting item on the programme was tJie pageant of Auckland's industries. The first section was historical, and boys and girls in the appropriate costumes illustrated the arrival of Governor Hobson, the coming of the Maoris, and other incidents in the early days of Auckland. The establishment of the first shops was shown, and then the industrial growth of the city was demonstrated by a march past of boys and girls in costumes representing the various manufacturing industries. Other items on the programme were cricket and football matches between players in ancient and modern costumes, and a demonstration of the sports played by modern girls.
