DOMESTIC'S THEFTS
STOLE FROM EMPLOYER IMPRISONMENT FOR A WEEK How an employer, after noticing thefts from a cashbox in a locked cupboard in bis room, marked coins in an attempt to apprehend the culprit, was described in the Police Court on Saturday. when Alice Evelyn O Neill (.Mr. Aekins), domestic, single, aged l't, admitted three charges of theft, involving £6 l.'is, the pro]>erty of James Neiper. Detective-Sergeant. MeHuuh said the accused was employed by Neiper, who noticed that money was taken from a cashbox in bis room on November 2(3, and again on December 1, the respective nmounts being £'•'! 10s and i"2 16s. Two half-crowns and a florin were tlien marked by him, and when they disappeared on December .4 the police were notified. The coins were found in the possession of the accused, who made a statement admitting the thefts. She said she spent the money on clothing.
Mr. Aekins said the accused came from Hamilton, and was unable to account for having taken the money. If given a chance on probation she was willing to make restitution, as she was sorry for what she had done. She had been quite truthful in order to clear up the matter, and she had never been in Court before.
"Stealing from an employer is always a more serious offence than common theft," said the magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, in passing sentence of seven days' imprisonment.
