CAPSIZE OF CAR
CRASH THROUGH WALL .FOUR OCCUPANTS ESCAPE STEERING-GEAR FAILURE A fortunate escape from injury was experienced by four members of the teaching staff of the Otahuhu Technical High School yesterday afternoon when a motor-ear in which they were travel" ling left the Great South Road near Westfield and capsized. The occupants were shaken, but unhurt.
The car, which was driven by Miss E. A. S. Mclndoe, with Misses W. F«. Sutton and M. D. Connon and Mr. S. D. Goldsmith as passengers, was travelling toward Auckland, when the st«r-ing-gear failed. The vehicle ran ofi the road, crashed through a low stone wall, and capsized into the adjoining paddock, about 6ft. below the highway level.
When the car, a closed model, came to rest, it was facing in a southerly direction, and lying on its hear side. The bodywork was splintered and torn from its mounting on the chassis on one side. Passers-by who ran to help were surprised to find the four occupants scrambling from the wreckage, unhurt but considerably shaken. It was later ascertained that part of the steering mechanism had given way. The car was removed by a break-do\vfl waggon.
