SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITIES COMPLIMENTARY DINNF.R HELD "The past year has been a success financially, from a membership viewpoint and as regards propaganda," said the retiring president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. at the annual meeting of the association, held in Milne and Choyco's Reception Hall last night, lb was preceded by a complimentary dinner at which the guests included the»JH. Hon. J. G. Coates, Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, M.P., the chairmen or presidents of many associated organisations and public bodies and representatives of a number of local bodies. Mr. Allum stressed the need for a strong association and nrged that membership should be still'further increased. He paid a tribute to the loyalty of the executive and members to him throughout his term of office. The president-elect, Mr. F. N. Ambler, said Mr. Allum had guided the association through 10 difficult j years and the value of his services was difficult to assess.
The annual report and balance-sheet, summaries of which have appeared in the Herald, were adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. F. N. Ambler; viee-presideuts, Mr. W. J. Truscott, Mr. H. W. Shove; general committee, Mr. J. F. Holloway, Mr. W. K. Fowler, Mr. A. W. Parker. Mr. A. G. Menzies. Mr. A. J. Shackell, Mr. C. B. Plummer, Mr. H. Hitehon, Mr. A. G., Brown, Mr. L. C. Miller, Mr. V. Dearsly, Mr. J. A. Steele. Mr. W. M. Kerns. Mr. C. A. Whitney. Mr. J. P. Stevfenson. Past presidents and representatives of certain affiliated bodies are ex officio members of the committee. Mr. N. A. Duthie was appointed auditor. Declaring that although the Dominion was still essentially a primary-pro-ducing country?" secondary industries, played a vital part in its make up, Mr. Coates said it was essential that young; men and women should be trained in industry so that they should have knowledge and technique necessary il: the Dominion was threatened from other quarters. The country had the outlook and will to become a nation and the people must he able to hold it if need arose. The president of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. Mf. D. Henry, referred to the trials of tho past year and the problems yet to bo overcome. They had still not secured concessions to compensate for the increased difficulties industry was facing,, but meanwhile they must seek greater efficiency.
