TOUR BY AMERICANS AUCKLAND CENTRE REJECTION AUSTRALIANS* VISIT APPROVED A decision not to proceed with a schema for the organisation of a tour in Xerv Zealand by American, Canadian and Australian swimmers, at a cost of £B4O, was made last night hv the Auckland Centre of tho Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Tho centre will nrrnngo a tour by the Australian ladv champion, Miss Evelyn do Lneey. of Perth, and an Australian male champion. Tho combined scheme, together with recommendations for separate visits by American. Canadian and Australian teams, was detailed in a report submitted to the previous meetinir of tho centre, and referred to the affiliated clubs, with a request that they should stale whether they would support the proposal financially. Tho only clubs reporting (hemselves to last night's meeting as favouring the scheme were Eastern Suburbs, Parneil, Olahuhu arid Whangarei. The rest considered the scheme too ambitious, but expressed approval of a visit by Miss do Lacoy and an Australian male swimmer. Replying to the official invitation extended by the centre to Miss de Lacoy, the honorary secretary to the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia stated that she was agreeable to come to New Zealand. Ho suggested that arrangements should be made lor her to visit Auckland directly after the Australian championship meeting, which would be held in Brisbane at the end of January next. Ho also expressed the union's willingness to select a suitable male swimmer after tho Australian titles had been contested. Members of tho centre agreed that only the holder of an Australian championship would be desired. Auckland senior championship events were allocated to clubs as follows:—Ponsonby, 4lOyds men's free-style; Mount Eden, ">o.vds men's free-style; Parneil, sooyds flying squadron relay; North Shore, 150 yds ladies' frco style. Mr ir. Johnson was appointed manager of the Auckland team that will compete at the New Zealand intermediate and junior championship meeting in Nelson on January !<!, 18 ancf 19, and Mrs. E. Johnson was appointed chaperone. Mr. L. J. Kenny was elected manager of the team representing Auckland at the New Zealand senior championship meeting, which will be held in New Plymouth on February t>, S and 10. Miss K. Tilsey was elected chaperone. The chairman, Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones. and the vice-chairman, Mr. R. Moore, were elected the centre's delegates to the annual conference of New Zealand centres, which will take place at NewPlymouth in conjunction with the New Zealand senior championships. On the suggestion of Mr. J. Enwright. it was agreed that efforts shouJd bo made lo interest the authorities of the secondary schools in the inauguration of annual interschools' swimming championships. The Mount Eden Club was granted permission to hold a carnival in the Mount Eden baths on December 10. With the object of discouraging swimmers from defaulting after nominating for races, the centre, having heard the opinions of clubs, adopted the following by-law:—"Fail-ing a reasonable excuse, swimmers whoso names appear on the list of accepted nominations, and who fail to carry out their obligations, shail be penalised, through the clubs, by & fine not exceeding twice the amount of the nomination fee. All fines shall be paid to the centre. Furthermore, at the centres discretion, their nominations shall not bo accepted for future events."
