FORTY-HOUR WEEK

OTAGO COALMIN ERS ARBITRATION COURT RULING [by TET/EGRAPIT —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Monday A decision to amend the Green Island Coalminors' Award and the Taratu Coalminers' industrial agreement to give a 40-hour week to be worked from Monday to Friday, the employers to have night-work and day-wage men on emergency work on Saturday, was made by the Arbitration Court to-day. The Court was addressed by Mr. A. McLagan for the workers, and Mr. T. 0. Bishop for the employers. After hearing the advocates, Mr. Justice Page said that the onus of proof that a 40-hour week was impracticable was on the employers. Since no evidence to that end had been submitted, and the advocates had informed the Court that other miners in New Zealand worked a five-day 40-hour week, the Court would have to grant the workers' application. SOAP WORKERS' DISPUTE A PARTIAL SETTLEMENT [BY TKtiEGRAPH —PHKSS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday A partial settlement has been reached in conciliation with respect to the Wellington Soap, Candle and Related Trades' dispute. Tlio Arbitration Court will have to settle the question of wages, and also the hours of work in part of the industry.
