TUDOR TAKES HURDLES TOSH DEFEATS ROLLICKER CAPPY AND CUTE MELODY WIN ItY ARCHER The second fancy Tosh finished attractively to win the Trial Stakes lrom the each-way fnvourito Hollicker. Besiege lost ground ;it. the start and Kacela was first away tVom To Huia, Uaeecall, Tosh and Hollicker. After going a couple of furlongs, Kacccall and Hollicker assumed command and they were the leaders into tho straight from To Huia, Jlronzette, Tosh and Susan. Half-way down the straight Hollickor Was in charge, but Tosh soon took his measure and went on to win by a length. To Huia ran on solidly to be a length and a-half away third and Young Paddon was fourth. iS'oxt to finish were Bron/.otto, Hacccall, Poker Face and Hold Blood. Tosh is a solid typo and was having only his second start. It appears as if lie will not be long in winning again. Hollicker registered his'third successive secondand To Huia made a good showing for third. Besiege lost his chance at the start. Surprise in Hurdles Having his tirst race for some months, Tudor brought otf a surprise in winning the Waiiuai Hurdles and returned double figures on the straightout machine. Lucidus ran down the tirst fence and when tho field had settled down Indolent and English Night were the leaders from Lucidus, Hacewhip, Kanapa and Curlew. Passing tho halfmile English Night was in charge and he led into the straight from Tudor, Lucidus, indolent, Lap Up and Merry. Lap. Tudor was in front at the last fence and in a good finish stayed on to win by a head from Merry Lap. llluminagh came home well to got third a nock away and Lap Up was a close fourth ahead of Indolent, Kanapa and Lucidus. It was a good race and class stood to the winner, who jumped splendidly. Merry Lap and Illuininagli ran up to their best form and Lap Up, who pulled up tender, went well. Lucidus did not race up to expectations and Curlew failed at tho end.

The well-supported Lornacro was responsible for a sound performance in w inning tho Hautapu Hack Handicap, for which High Test was the actual win favourite. Lornacro and Ellanui were quickly prominent and when the field had settled down Winlona was in command from Mazzini, Ellanui. Philcmup, High Test and Lornacro. Winlona was still in front entering tho straight from Ellanui and Mazzini. A furlong from the post Lornacro came through and scored by half-a-lcngth from Gay Sister. Gay Streak also ran well to be a neck away third and High Test was fourth. Then followed Brown Lap, Student Prince and Winlona. The placed horses all ran fine races and High Test, who wont wide at the turn, also shaped well. Student Prince made an excellent showing after being badly loft and it appeared that he would have been very difficult to beat if he had got away on even terms. Jonathan Runs Unplaced

The each-way favourite Jonathan missed .a place in the Waikato Cup, which Dark Shadow won in good style. Tradesman and Dark Shadow were quickly in the lead and they made the running from Kin)j Roy, Grateful, Sinking Fund, Enge, Big Dook and Jonathan. Dark Shadow was first into the ■straight from Tradesman, King Hey, Grateful and Sinking Fund and went on to win by half-a-length from King Hey. Sinking Fund was a similar distance away third, just defeating Mazir, who finished very fast from the rear. Next to finish were Grateful, Mungatoon, Big Dook, Scotland and Wait and Sec. Dark Shadow registered a pleasing performance and King Rey did well in his first race for some time. Grateful looked likely below the distance, but faded at the end. Jonathan had every chance, hut could make no impression in the straight. It was with a fine finishing run that Light Comedy won the Claudelands High-Weight Handicap. Light Comedy jumped out cleanly, but after going about a furlong gave way to Mungacre, Mustang,' Musquil, Keith Ln and Solaria. Mungacre carried on the running across the top and led into tho straight from Mustang, Musquil, Solaria, Miss Lu, Keith Lu and Tuaheahe. A furlong from the post Mmigacrc, Mustang, Musquil and Solaria were fighting hard for supremacy. A little further on Light- Comedy flashed up on the outside to win by a neck from Musquil. Tuaheaho finished on strongly to he another neck away third and Mungacre was n close fourth. Next to finish were Con Fuoco, Miss Lu and Mustang. Light Comedy is on tho improve and should he capable of winning a good handicap this season. Musquil and Tuaheahe returned fine place dividends. The last half furlong beat Solaria and Mungacre. Winner From New Plymouth

The New Plymouth-trained Cute Melody won tlio Tamnliere Stakes at a good price. Fold berg and Cute Melody were soon proniinent from IJaeeline, White Foam and Nuclei. Cute Melody drew out slightly after entering tho straight and went 011 to win h.v threeparts of a length from Elanage, who eame home strongly 011 the outside. Trilliareh battled 011 solidly to get third, a neck away, and White Foam was elose up fourth, with Nuclei and Penzance next. Cute Melody is a longstriding filly and displayed fine speed. Elanage did not begin too well, but put in some good work In tho straight. Trilliareh also ran on at the end. Penzance was closer at the finish than at any other stage and Nuclei was also doing good work at the end. The each-wav favourite Star Artist

was a trifle slow to begin in the Cambridge Handicap and was never prominent. Royal Dance was first to show out, but Syineonv soon ran to the front front Galilee, Gay Sheila, Impasto and Glav Seton. Crossing the top S.vnicony put a break 011 tho field and sho entered the. straight six lengths ahead of Golden Sheila, Naniakia, Gay Seton, Adalerio and Impasto. Near the distance Symcony began to tiro and Golden Sheila soon took her measure to win by a length and a-lialf from Impasto, who also ran 011 well. Adalone finished 011 to lie a neck away third, and Syineonv faded into fourth position. Then followed Royal Appellant, Wahino Ueihi, Gay Seton and Itoynl Dance. Golden Sheila registered a good performance and is a fine filly who should do well as the season progresses. Itoyal Appellant was running on at the end, where he was closer than at any other stage. Light-weight Succeeds The light-weight Cappy brought off a surprise in the Taupiri Hack Handicap, paying over a score for a win. Torch ran to the front quickly from Cheval de Voice, Gloucester, Sweet Hose and Little Artist. Torch was still 111 charge entering tho straight from Cheval de Voice, Gloucester, Sweet Hose and Tattle Artist. Once into the straight Gloucester assumed command Lut was immediately challenged by Cappy. Inside the distance Cappy had charge and be withstood a determined challenge from Morial to win by a neck. Gay Egypt ran on strongly to be half a length away third and Little Artist was fourth, followed by Torch, Rulette and Calcutta. Cappy registered his best performance to date. Merial finished fast and appeared a shade unlucky.
