RACING IN WAIKATO

TE RAPA_EVENTS CUr TO DAIiK SHADOW SUCCESS OF GOLDEN SHEILA SEVERAL SURPRISE WINNERS LARGE totalisator increase A very large crowd attended the first day of the Waikato Hacing Club's Spring Meeting at '.lo Ha pa on Saturday. Ihe gates yielded t.'H.">2, against £.500 last year. The totalisator handled £42,562 10s, compared with £21,652 10s last vc,ir. an incr-'ase of £17.1)10. Apparently the attendance was much larger than had been anticipated, ami the delays occasioned at the totalisator causv'd the last race to be run threequarters of an hour behind schedule. However, the club has in view the immediate further extension of betting facilities. The new members' stand was used for the tirst time and the facilities it affords were favourably commented upon. In the•course of the day the Hon. P. C. Webb. Minister of Minos, who was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. \Y. Lee Marti", officially opened the stand. The racing was of a high order, and in most instances the finishes were very close. Dark Shadow again revealed fine form in winning the Waikato Cup, his first success in ibis class of race. Golden Sheila put up a brilliant |>erformauec j in the Cambridge Handicap, while in j winning the Melrose Maiden Handicap : Tosh was revealed as a galloper of distinct promise. The Wainiat Hurdles provided the closest finish of the day and the win of Tudor, making his first appearance for five months, was vetv popular. Tudor's victory was a surprise, as also were the successes of Cute Melody and Cappy. Results: — TRIAL STAKES, Sweepstakes of £3, with £l5O added; special weights; 0 fur. 22 —TOSII.. M. J.
