MORTGAGE LAWS
EARLY OPERATION EXPECTED APPOINTMENT OF COMMISSIONS [3T TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION]. WELLINGTON, Tuesday Good progress has been made by the Government and State officials in the preliminary work necessary for the administration of the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act passed during the last session of Parliament, and it is expected that in the near future the legislation will commence to operate. The Attorney-General, the Hon. H. G. It. Mason, said to-day that applications were being received now and he anticipated that the appointment of some of the adjustment commissions wolifd be made almost immediately. At the moment it was not expected that there would be an increase in the number of commissions that operated tinder the previous Government's mortgage legislation. The feature of the administration of the Act, he said, would be to encourage voluntary settlements. CIVIL CLAIMS ADJOURNED WIDE EFFECTS OF THE ACT [by telegraph—owx correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday For the reason that most of the cases which came before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., this morning concerned members of the farming community affected by recent mortgage legislation and consequently could not be dealt with until after January, the Court proceedings to-day were completed within half an hour, practically all the cases being adjourned until February. The magistrate said that although the indications wore for a congestion of civil cases in February, he had no doubt that further adjournments would then be necessary before the cases were all finally disposed of. The Act had wide effects, as instanced in the case of a plaintiff affected by tho legislation losing a civil action, in which case the defendant would not be able to recover costs from the plaintiff, who would bo protected by the Act.
