TWO-YEAR-OLD EARLY SCHOOL FAVOURITE FOR NEXT DERBY [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Oct. 10 The Derby has eluded Lord Astor time and time again/ If success should come to him in Coronation year the racing world will be delighted. His two-year-old, Early School, has gone into retirement for the winter unbeaten and favourite for the Derby. This colt is by the Derby winner, Felstead, out of Quick Rise, by Hurry On. He traces to Chelandry, a member of the famous Illuminata family. Early School was tho big attraction at the York meeting, where ho won very easily the Malton Plate, of £IOOO, from one opponent. Prince Aly Khan's Mordkin. Early School had his lank, grey rival beaten in the first furlong. .He is a hard bay, marked with white round his off coronet and near hind heel. Sporting Life wrote of him: —"Few youngsters girth better, and altogether he does credit to the stout lines in his pedigree. You have to see the colt in action to appreciate him at his true worth. He is a resolute mover, gets his hocks well under him when going at full stretch, and gives the impression that he is a stayer in the making. He will benefit from the easy race he had. There is nothing like such an outing to give a horse confidence. "It was a treat to sec Early School's fine swinging gallop as he passed the post. He went some way beyond the paddock gate before R. Dick could null him up, emphasising that lie was on excellent terms with himself. Ho <roes into winter headquarters as favourite for the Derby, in which race he will probably be ridden by G. Richards If the champion jockey can win his first Derby in the colours of Lord Astor it will bo one of the most popular victories on record."
