INCITES ON RUNNING

EASY FOR I'ONIAIM) TRAVENNA FAILS TO STAY STOLEN MARCH'S IMPROVEMENT [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN. Thursday The Dunodin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opened in dull weather, following n shower during the early morning. The going seemed to he a little greasy early in the day, but it improved considerably. There was a small attendance, but the investments showed an increase 011 last year's figures. Yitaphone, who had broken down, was struck out of the Spring Hurdles. Polydora was mado a good favourite, but she settled her chance by bad jumping. San toft nearly came down through slipping on landing at the second hurdle, and Royal Pal fell for the same reason at the five furlongs post. Redolent was ridden a waiting race, instead of going to the front, and 110 won comfortably at the finish from Golden Lap, who was making his first start over hurdles. Polydora was last at the home turn, and then drew up to beat Wexford IJridgo for third place. Black Karl swerved at tlio start of the Trial Handicap, and Thermidor, Gold Boa, La France and Hodeur mado the pace in front of Autumn Wind. Gold Boa went to the front when approaching tho home turn, but Autumn Wind got on terms at tho distance and won comfortably. Thermidor, La France and Hodeur were stopping at the finish, but Thermidor was galloped on. " A One-horse Race " Poniard made a one-horse race of tho Maungatua Handicap. Van toon moved into second place early in tho race, but he failed to get near the winner. The others did not appear able to act in tho sticky going. The Electric Handicap was a good betting race, with Paper Slipper and Wild Career starting practically even favourites to win. Greek Gold dwelt a trifle. When they settled down, Pelmet took charge, and led Paper Slipper and Capital to tho home turn. Bay Duke had dropped back. Paper Slipper took charge as soon as they straightened up and won nicely from Capital, who boat Greek Gold similarly. Pelmet ami Wild Career were next. Greek Gold made np a deal of ground over the last three furlongs. For tho Mosgiel Handicap, Travenna was supported to a short price. Ho went to the front and was four lengths in front of The Surgeon and Tauramai as they raced to the turn. Travenna was still clear as they entered the straight, but The Surgeon got to him inside the distance and came on to win by a safe margin. Toreador was a fair third and the others were easing up. Golden King commenced to tail off half a mile from home. Ho was badly cut through being galloped on. Public's Good Judgment Card Player and Atalanta Lass were singled out in the McLean Stakes and they had the finish to thomselves. Atalanta Lass turned for home looking all over a winner, but Card Player wore her down. Auctor was third and making up ground. Heidelberg whipped round at the start and the others failed to stay. The disappointment of the race was Lazybones, who came from Riccarton with a track reputation. Auctor is privately trained at Mosgiel Park. Atalanta Lass will be sharpened up by the race. Vikin<r was ridden to the front in the October Handicap and began to drop back when headed by Daring Deed three furlongs from home. Queen Dorothy outstayed the others and won well from Double Shot and Daring Deed. Matoru was a solid favourite for tho Taioma Handicap and he beat them all but Stolen March, who showed a marked improvement on recent form. Matoru was on the outside of the field all the way and his final run was left a little late. Still, he had 9.7 had to be patiently handled. Top Notch. made up ground to get third place; the others failed to stay.

WORK AT TE RAPA PENZANCE DISPLAYS SPEED DARK SHADOW'S SOUND TASK [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday The going was in splendid order in spite of a heavy dew at Te Ra pa this morning, when the final gailops of the majority of local candidates for Ellerslie were executed on the course proper, SOft. out from the rails. The best efi'nrt was that of the Mitchelson Cup candidate, Dark Shadow, while the two-year-old Penzance also shaped well. Prince Acre hit out freely over seven furlongs in 1.34, being accompanied by Lionheart over the first five in 1.5 J. A smart half-mile was credited to Royal Bachelor and Singara, the former doing the better at the end in /52 Js, the first three furlongs being run in .''7r. There was little between Star Artist and the improving Rollicker over half-a-mile in 625. Little Leslie, with tho assistance of an Acre gelding, dashed over the same distance in 53 3-ss. Light Comedy occupied 55s for a similar effort. Lucidus, who looks a picture, was not after time while running a round in 2.14. Dark Shadow was sent a mile and a-quarter, being accompanied by Merial over tho first six furlongs, and Sir Tommy over a round. Sir Tommy carried him along to the six-furlong post, but Dark Shadow then drew away and was well clear at the completion of a round. He was not timed to tho mile and a-quarter, but registered 2.3 for tho round, a sound effort. The first three furlongs were run in 375, four in 52 2-ss, five in 1.6}, and six furlongs in 3.20. Dark Shadow should provo equal to a good effort on Saturday. Tosh beat Sergia to the half-mile post in 51 is, the latter carrying on to the five furlongs in 1.6 2-5. Silver Brier ran a round in 2.(5}, but could have improved on the time. A Surveyor filly, a Little England gelding, and Young Paddon brushed over two furlongs along the back in 24Js. Trilliarch and Trouvaille ran half-a-.-nile in 52 2-ss. King Hey, who is engaged on the seeoruF dny at Ellerslie, was doing slightly better than Tradesman over the concluding stages of seven furlongs in 1.32)1, the first lialf-niilo in 525. A smart trial over three furlongs along the hack was that of Penzance, who broke 36s after running lie: 1 first furlong iri 12s. She is in good condition for the Welcome Stakes.

ARRIVAL OF VISITORS ROYAL SECRET AND NOTIUM The latest arrivals at Ellerslie include Sinking Fund, Curlew, Philemup, Notium and Royal Secret. Notium and Royal Secret arrived from Taranaki by train yesterday morning and are iu good heart.
