UNUSUAL CHARGE
TAXI-DRIVER FINED • __ METER NOT USED An unusual prosecution, for failing tc set a taxi-meter in motion, was brought in the Magistrate's Court yesterday against a taxi-driver, Sydney T. Lewis. Defendant pleaded not guilty on tho grounds that the by-laws permitted hiring by time or by distance. Ijle claimed that he had been hired by time. He had been approached by a woman passenger from an overseas steamer, who had asked what the fare would be to a city hotel. He told hqr the charge, including carriage of luggage, would be 2s. The meter fare to the hotel was Is, without luggage. "This was not hiring by time; it was hiring by distance," said tho magistrate, Mr. W. I?. McKean, "You knew how far it was, and this by-law was not intended to cover that. I am not concerned with the luggage." Defendant was fined 10s and costs.
