TRAINING TEACHERS
METHOD OF SELECTION CHANGES INTENDED A change in the method of selecting students for admission to teachers' training colleges is at present under consideration by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, according to a memorandum received by the Auckland Education Board from the department yesterday. Members agreed that a change was desirable. Tho department asked the board to comment on the proposal that in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurcli and Dunedin the selection committee should consist of the senior inspector, one member of the board, and the principal of the training college. Although, he said, ho did not wish to make any reflection on the principal of the college, the chairman, Air. T. U. Wells, said he thought tho principal should not be asked tp undertake the responsibility of selecting students upon whom lie would later have to report. He said he thought the board should bo empowered to appoint two membors, or one member and the secretary. It was decided to advise the department that the board considered the students should be selected by a committee consisting of two representatives of the board and the senior inspector.
