RULE IN DANZIG
LEAGUE'S EECOUKSE QUESTION LEFT TO POLAND DILEMMA CAUSED BY NAZIS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrignt GENEVA, Oct. 5 The Council of the League of Nations has requested the Polish Go vernment to assume the responsibility for finding a solution of the problems of Danzig. The Polish representative accepted the task. The report of the committee appointed to examine the situation makes it clear that the Council and its Hi<zh Commissioner "are at present meeting with systematic obstruction from the Danzig Senate," which is controlled by a Nazi majority. Formerly a German city, Danzig was set up, bv the Treaty of Versailles, as a Free State under a High Commissioner responsible to the League of Nations. This was a compromise intended to satisfy Poland's demand for a seaport. The population is iJ.j per cent German. Sineo the advent of llerr Hitler to power in Germany his political doctrines have gained a strong foothold in the I'Tcc State and the Nazis hold a majority of the seats in the Senate. Herr Greiser. the Nazi President of the Senate, recently summoned to Geneva, defied the League of Nations to interfere with his unruly and autocratic administration.
Tho League decided last week to remove the High Commissioner, Mr. Sean Lester, appointing him Deputy Secre-tary-General at Geneva. No' successor has yet been announced. The German Government makes no secret of its wish to regain control of the citv.
