POLECAT KILLED
AN UNWELCOME PEST [by tku;chavh—own ROTORUA, Tuesday An unusual animal, similar in shape and yet larger than the ordinary stoat, which was stunned when it ran in front of a car proceeding from Tnrawera toward Rotorua on Sunday evening, was identified on Monday by Mr. A. Kean, conservator of game and fish, as a polecat. The animal, which w;IS found by Mr. Cecil Way, of Tarawera, had a vellowish-black coat and the size ot its head was almost as big-as tha of a cat It was a particularly good specimen and has scjjt to W e ington to be mounted. Mr. Kean stated to-day that while this species of cats had been reporte to him 011 numerous occasions, they were by no means common, lhey er ® a menace to game in the district an had also been known to attack lambsTrappers had reported killing polecats in the bush between the Huka Fa 5 and Taupo, while a number bad be*?ll- - from Repcroa.
