COLLIERIES IDLE

TARATU MEN STOP WORK RECENT DEMAND RECALLED [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] DUNEDIN, Tuesday Work at Taratu Collieries, near Kaitangata, has been at a standstill since Monday morning, following a stopwork meeting held by the miners. The mines have been working since July 1 under a 1931 Arbitration Court award. A few weeks ago the Taratu Miners' Union applied for a new award, and the demands included a seven-hour day. By consent of all the parties at a conciliation meeting on August 8, the matter was referred to the Arbitration Court.

The Kaitangata Coal Company's mines are not affected by the dispute at present.
