ARMING FOR PEACE

Sir, —1 notice in Saturday's issue that "Britisher" shares in "Citizen's" panic as to what is to be done in New Zealand in the event of war. If he had been here as long as I have he would have known that from the time of the Maori War (in which my father fought) down to the Boer War and the Great War, we New Zealanders have always shown ourselves fighters. So emphatically so that General Ludendorff in his book on the war refers to the New Zealand Division as the Corps d'elite of the British Army. There is no use in panicking, and to calm your correspondent's fears 1 would refer to our Government's assurance that matters of local defence have their attention. Further than that they do not say, for it is not usual to shout from the housetops of what such safeguards consist. Luther.
