STREET APPEAL

HELP - FOR AMBULANCE NEARLY £IOOO RECEIVED NOTABLE RESPONSE MADE There Aras a. ready response to tho annual street appeal of tho St. John Ambulance Association, which vras conducted throughout the city and suburbs yesterday. A total of £950 was received last night and, as there aro still a few returns to come, it is thought the final figure will be about £IOOO, which is a. considerable increase on that of last year. "It is really a wonderful result,' said Mr. S. E. Langstone, secretarymanager of the association, last night. "The annual maintenance of the association is about £3OOO, and to have one-third of this provided by the street appeal is, L think, without precedent. It is most gratifying to find that the public's appreciation, of the service is increasing each year." Tho collection, as usual, comprised a wide variety of coins of various denominations and nationalities. Iho presence of the American liner Mariposa, in port yesterday, was clearly in evidence. Practically every coin of the United States was represented, as well as a "green back," or dollar note. In addition, there were a number of French, Japanese and other currency tokens. "Loaned for amusement only" was the inscription on one of tho several valueless coins received. Appreciation of the excellent work of the Mayoress of Auckland, Mrs. Ernest Davis, who organised the appeal, was expressed by Mr. Langstone. Mrs. Davis made a personal inspection of the stalls yesterday, in spite of the fact that she left in the evening for Sydney. The work of all the other volunteers, who represented nearly every social and charitable organisation, was greatly appreciated. Tribute also was paid by Mr. Langstono to the highly efficient work of fivo revenue officers of the Auckland j Transport Board, who, from six until i nine o'clock last night, counted the con- j tents of collection boxes totalling £758. j PLUNKET SOCIETY FUNDS DUNEDIN CONTRIBUTION [TIY TELEGRAPH —PKF.SS ASSOCIATION] j DUNEDIN, Friday The annual sale of daffodils in the city on behalf of the Plunket Society to-day resulted in £377 being collected.
