The committee of the South Canterbury Racing Club has decided almost unanimously to revert to win and place betting at Washdyke. Although the Waipuktirau Jockey Club made a loss of .C2S 10s on its racing account last, season, the farming activities showed a profit of JL'.'iOL. Aiwai, winner of the Avonrlale Cup, does not possess a Maori name. The word is simply the phonetic Maori spelling of 1.Y., an abbreviation for Imperial Yeomanry. Aiwai's dam is Yeomanry. Mr. I). H. Roberts lias handed over to F. Christmas a three-year-old gelding by Dolomite from Miss Bradbury and a two-year-old filly by Colossus from Glenluce. They will not ho required to race for some time. No fewer than three of the races at the Taumarunui meeting at. Paeroa today will finish at the second winning post, which lias been erected recently. These are the Trial Handicap, the Flying Handicap and the Spring Hack Handicap, all of which are to be run over six furlongs. The four-year-old Lady Valma ran lier best raco to date when she finished a close fourth in the Maiden Plate at Avondale, after being one of the leaders from barrier-rise. She is a smart beginner and over a furlong shorter distance she may prove difficult to beat in the Trial Handicap at Paeroa to-day. The six-year-old Gold Boy, by Paladin from Constant, by Martian, has been bought by Mr. E. D. Davis, the owner of Carfcx, and lie will bo trained in future by 10. Kingan at Greymouth. Gold Boy won a race at Tapanui as a two-year-old, hut since then ho has secured only one third placing. Consistency was a feature of the form of Little Ruse last season, when he was only once unplaced in six starts and wound up by winning two successive races on tlio one day at Tauranga. Little Ruse is due to make his first appearance this season in the Spring Handicap at Paeroa and ho may run well. Although ho faded out at the end, Singara displayed sufficient dash in the Maiden Plate at Avondale to indicate that ho has prospects in minor events ahead. 'J'he race is likely to have improved him and ho may bo seen to greater advantage at Paeroa. Singara is a four-year-old half-brother, by Whirlwind, to Bambury and Queen's Counsel. Athea, a candidate for the Kerepeehi Flack Handicap at Paeroa, is a three-year-old filly by Vaals or Tea Tray from Cybelc. She was unplaced in her three starts last season. General Ruse, who is in the same event, is a four-year-old gelding by General La tour from Peruse. Up to the present he has had very little racing, but he bred well enough to bo able to gallop fast. , Maereana, a candidate for the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap, at Paeroa to-day, is a three-year-old chestnut filly by Vaals from Merry Day, hence a fullsister to Mafeking, who displayed very useful form just before ho died last ■ season. Whereas Mafeking was black , find resembled his dam, who was a dark ; brown, Maereana has thrown to her sire in colour. She has not raced perilously. 5 - < Few jocko,ys would voluntarily can- i a Royal engagement, and probably i no other jockey in the world to-day J has ever taken that step for such a ( reason as did Frank Sampson, an in- I tornationnl who rode his first winner i in England last month. Sampson was f retained to ride for tho King of Ru- I mania, but because he could not send 1 any money out of the country to sup- t port his wife and family he severed t his connection with the Royal stable. £
