How true is this trite saying in respect of the ordinary man in the street s impression in regard to the cost of brick construction. It is a general opinion that brick construction is considerably higher in cost than, for example, ordinary weatherboard. This is not true to-day. Brick manufacturers are producing morsels of enduring beauty which can be used for the external facing of domestic buildings at a cost which is little, if an y> above that for weatherboards. All the charm and colour and texture which is indelibly burnt into the very nature of bricks is within the reach of all, even those of slender means. Bricks, like all materials, can be used in a variety of methods methods which would vary according to the requirements of the work which the bricks are to do. Architects and contractors to-day make a feature of brick veneer construction, i.e., you have an external wall composed of indestructible brick. In this wall the bricks may be left in their natural colour and finish, or, if it is so desired by reason of the architectural design, they may be plastered or stuccoed in varying textures and colours also, while a combination of both the natural brick and textured stucco is very often used to excellent advantage. Realising that a very large field for use is in the construction of low-cost domestic residences, brick manufacturers have exerted themselves to supply a brick which, in unit cost and ultimate appearance, will be both within the means of the smallest home-builder and yet sufficiently attractive to merit its use in the expensive mansion construction. The brick veneer construction to which we have referred enjoys an immense vogue in the United States, and is daily increasing in popularity in New Zealand. Bricks have a record of service extending over thousands of years, and their very adaptability makes them particularly applicable for use under present-day conditions. Present-day architecture calls for a very large degree of ingenuity in treatment of materials, and it is here that bricks lend themselves admirably for interesting use, and yet this can be done at exceptionally low cost. Probably brick is unique as a building material which offers so many advantages in use. Brick is practically everlasting; there is no depreciation or maintenance with brick; it is fire-resisting; possesses a high degree of insulation against either heat or cold; and the passage of time serves only to mellow and enhance the beauty and charm of the original colour and texture. Another very important aspect from the home-builder s point of view is that brick is very favourably regarded by lending institutions, and finance for homes can be much more easily arranged on brick houses than on other types. Again, in the event of disposal, brick houses are usually sold at a higher value than houses built of other materials which might have cost originally just as much to build. When we consider all these advantages there is no doubt that we have in brick a very excellent building material, which has the added advantage of being of entirely New Zealand manufacture.
