GOLD MINE STRIKE

DISPUTE IN FIJI SOME MEN RETURN TO WORK SETTLEMENT IN SIGHT [from our own correspondent] SUVA, Sept. 29 Labour troubles are reported to have occurred at the Tavua sold mines, about 130 miles from Suva, where half-caste labour at the Emperor mine refused to acknowledge a new schedule of wages. Following two meetings with Mr. E. G. Theodore, the men are reported to have struck, and also to have attempted to persuade the men at the Loloma mine to come out in sympathy. It is stated that the natives at the Emperor mine also struck for higher wages. Later reports from the mines state that although many of the half-castes have left the field, the Fijians are back at work, and the back of the strike is broken. Except for a few cases of intimidation there has been no trouble, and it is also expected that in a few days the half-castes also will return to work.
