MANUKAU SEAT

BY-ELECTION RESULT LABOUR'S ORGANISATION EXAMPLE TO OPPONENTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION 1 WELLINGTON, Friday Tho chairman of the Dominion executive of the National Party, Mr. C. H. Weston, K.C., in a statement 011 the result of the Mantikau h.v-elec-tion, said that in his view the figures ol the voting showed the beginning of a swing away from the existing Government. The election was very keenly fought and, as far as the National Party was concerned, its candidate was a good one, the organisation excellent i and the co-operation between the Parliamentary party and the Dominion and Auckland executives of the warmest character. "But we must take our hats off to the Labour organisation." said Mr. Weston. "1 suppose tho New Zealand Labour political machine today is probably the most jierfect of its kind in the world. Everything was attended to down to the last detail. With a contribution from compulsory unions its funds arc ample, and it can afford, including trade union organisers, as distinct from secretaries, to have over 200 organisers working in New Zealand at the present time, keen, efficient and well paid. To the National Party it is an example and a warning." MEMBER CONGRATULATED TIM BER WORK ER S' R ESOLUTION Congratulations to Mr. A. G. Osborne on winning the Mantikau seat on Wednesday were expressed by the Timberworkers' Union at a meeting on Thursday night, when the following resolution was passed: —"The Auckland timberworkers congratulate the candidate and the Government upon the vote of confidence passed by the electors of Manukau, and upon the progressive legislation that the Government has placed on the Statute Book of this country." _
