PACIFIC COAST

SHIPPING TROUBLE

HOLD-UP THREATENED AMERICAN LABOUR DISPUTES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received October 1, 5.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 The Maritime Commission pleaded today with the owners, and the unions in an endeavour to avert the threatened immobilisation of Pacific Coast shipping. This would affect 37,000 men whose union contracts will expire early to-morrow. The com mission sent ;i telegram to Harry Brides, the San Francisco Labour leader, as the key man. asking him to accept a G()-days' extension of

the present agreement. In the meantime, a strike has occurred in New ork as a result of a dispute within the seamen's union. The transatlantic liner President Roosevelt was prevented from sailing.

Later information is to the effect that a 15 days' truce is virtually assured in the dispute. EMBARGO BY RAILWAYS IMPORTERS' DIFFICULTIES A cablegram received last evening by a leading Auckland importer of motors from the United States indicated that the railway companies were refusing to accept car freights for the Pacific coast owing to the imminence of labour troubles. The Southern Pacific Railroad was accepting shipments only on condition that the consignees guaranteed storage charges for what possibly would be a prolonged period.
