LATE SHOPPING NIGHT

-EXTENSION BY AN HOUR PALMERSTON NORTH TRADERS [by telegraph —own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday Because the majority of shopkeepers felt that the loss of trade between 8.30 and 9 o'clock on Friday nights was detrimental, a meeting of retailers has decided to extend the late night to 9.30 o'clock. Closing at 8.30 p.m. was agreed to when the new hours for shop assistants came into force, to permit earlier opening during the week. The effect of changing to the Saturday half-holiday was also discussed. One business man .remarked that trade with his firm had been definitely better during the last month, compared with the corresponding period in the previous year.

There was no response when the chairman asked for an expression of opinion from anyone opposed to the change.
