BEACON FOR FLIERS
HAMILTON INNOVATION VISIBLE FOR 25 MILES [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday Stated to be the first of its kind in New Zealand, an aeri.il beacon of 3,000,000 candle-power is being erected at Hamilton by Mr. H. D. Caro. The beacon will be mounted on a steel tower 70ft. high, and the beam will be visible 25 miles away to aircraft flying at night at a height of 2000 ft. It is expected to be operating in a week's time. The beacon is of Abe standard type used in the United States on the transcontinental air lines. To guard against breakdowns, the beacon is fitted with dual lamps, and if one should burn out another is automatically swung into position and lit. At the same time a red lamp is switched on to indicate to the service-man that the beacon is operating on the spare lamp. Six beacons of a similar type are being imported, and will be erected in other centres throughout the Dominion. Jt is anticipated that with the development of night flying they will be chartered to the Government.
