ESCAPED PRISONER
SEARCH STILL FRUITLESS MISSING SINCE SUNDAY The prisoner who escaped from the Waikuno camp, John William Graves, still eludes the warders and police who have searched for him since his disappearance last Sunday afternoon. Although it is surmised that Graves has followed the old military road between Tokaanu and Manunui, about four miles south of Taumarunui, there are several alternative routes, and at present the police are baffled.
Moreover, Graves must be .a good bushman and have made a fast journey through the rough country, or else he has a good supply of food and has a hiding-place that escaped the notice of his pursuers. The night and day patrols that have scoured the countryside through and round National Park, and as far as the Whakapapa Biver, have no inkling of his whereabouts. Settlers in outlying districts have been questioned, but no one appears to have seen him. In any case, there is the probability that in the daytime Graves has kept to the more unfrequented parts of the territory, and at night has taken advantage of the darkness to pass through areas which in daylight would provide him with little cover. All roads and sections of the railway line are watched.
