TEMPERANCE UNION

AUCKLAND CONVENTION • /' > j' . At the continuation of the Women's Christian Temperance Union Convention yesterday several remits were diseussecl and adopted. Anxiety was expressed by several speakers in connection with the increasing influence of art unions. While congratulating the Prime Minister and members of the Government on the advanced legislation brought down, in many humane directions, thus removing much fret and anxious care from the minds of many people, the convention urged that serious consideration be given to this matter by the Government, not only as regarded this increasing influence, but also-in regard to the too long facilities that existed for gambling. Another remit that was adopted was one urging that tho law prohibiting drinking in railway carriages be more strictly enforced; also tLat smoking be restricted to carriages provided for that purpose.

The convention also adopted the following:—"That this convention views with alarm, the increased drinking of alcoholic beverages in and around dance halls, and urges, local , branches to approach local authorities and local police regarding tho provision of stricter supervision."

Another resolution adopted by tho convention was to tho effect that in view of the scientific evidence now available as to tho effects of alcohol in respect to motoring and road safety, tho convention emphatically protested against the demands now being made for tho provision of more liquor licences on tourist routes, and for tho granting of "house" licences. It also applauded the action taken by tho Farmers' Union conference in condemning drinking at dances. Tho report of the Maori department's work presented by the superintendent, Mrs. Maungatai Babbington, made appreciative acknowledgment of the clothing and financial support given to this work. It was decided to adopt a Maori Mothers' Union apd to keep in touch with it by means of correspondence, gifts of literature etc.
