DAIRY CONFERENCE

NORTH AUCKLAND MEETING QUESTION OF UNIFORM ADVANCE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, Wednesday There waa a large and representative attendance yesterday at the North Auckland Dairy Conference, the chairman, Mr. E. G. Appleton, presiding. Consideration was given to a mction that the conference join up with the National Dairy Federation. Mr. H. M. Ned said the intention was to form a body fully representative of the industry, so as to be in a position to approach the Government when required on matters of interest to the industry. He said it was generally felt that the Farmers' Union was not i:ully representative of the industry. Mr. C. B, Miehie said the Dairy Board, which was the mouthpiece, was not entirely free from Government control. ~ ' _ . Air R. W. Johns said the Dairy Board did not really represent the dairy industry to-day, and he considered the federation a necessity to the industry. ~ , _ , , , . The chairman said he had no doubt that all the dairy companies would ioin the federation. The proposal was carried unanimously. Tlio chairman said that, as a result of a motion at the last conference, when it was desired that all North Auckland dairy companies should mako a uniform advance to suppliers in order to avoid any jealousies among suppliers, .lie had issued a circular asking all companies to make the monthly advance on the basis of Is per lb. for finest. Mr. F. Elliott, chairman of the Hikurangi company, said his company proposed to advance at the rate of ] 2jd •per lb for superfine, and the directors considered it would still be in the position to pay a bonus of Id per lb. at the end of the year. Mr. E. S. Trcmaine, chairman of the Wliangarei Dairy Company, said ho thought the suggestion of the chairman 'to advance Is was a good one. Other speakers gave their views, but no motion was carried as the chairman ■isaid it could not be binding to the companies, but ho expressed the hope .•that all companies would endeavour to make a uniform monthly advance.
