RIFLE SHOOTING.

EMPIRE SCHOOLS* CONTEST WHANGAREI'S PERFORMANCE [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Wednesday In the shoot for the Earl Roberts Shield, carried out yesterday, the Whangarei High School A team trained the honour of scoring the highest points in the Northern Command. The shield is contested annually by by the schools of the Empire. The team completed the competition with a total score of 252 points, the next best performance in the command being that of Auckland Grammar School, with a score of 224 points. The contest consisted 01 four practices, including five rounds application at 500 yds, five rounds rapid at 200 yds, and five rounds snap at 200 yds, and a fire movement practice with shots at distances from 500 yds to 100 yds. The members of the toam were:—Sergeant D. Lane, 65 points; Sergeant H. Rogers, 65 points; Cadet 11. Gurr, 03 points: Corporal W. McConnell, 50 points. The High School B team (D. Ward. R. Kermode, R. Coote and F. Cumpsty) also competed. The shooting was under the supervision of the area officer, Captain H. 31. Foster, assisted by Captain S. B. Dunn and SergeantMajor Andrewes.

TROPHIES FOR SEASON [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Wednesday The closing night of the Whangarei Miniature Rifle Club took place last night. A pairs shoot was held, and wan won by .T. Barron, 79, I—Bo.1 —80. and F. Williams, 77, l—7B. The president, Mr. H. W. Bavies, presented tho tropaies won during the season, as follows:—Championship, A.; Iliggins; Wcolley "trophy, for the runner-up," Rr-'ien-nii'gs; A- J. Murdoch trophy, F. Williams; J. Courtney trophy. R. Jennings; A. Higgins tiophy, H. Foster; M. K. Stewart trophy, R. 'Ljnch; Mrs. W. H M. Yarrow trophy. F. Wiiliams; D. E. Wilton trophy, R. Lynch; C. T. A. Clarke trophy, for the highest average off the rifle, A. Iliggins; F. H. Cowan tiophy, R. Lynch; Dr. H. F. Buckley trophy, 11. Foster; R. T. Tudehope trophy, A. Higgins, H. W. Crawford trophy, A. Iliggins; Bargain Stores, Limited, Cup (team shoot). S. Withers, L. Holmes and M. K. Stewart; I'lumbers' Cup, Firestono team (H. Foster. W. Newman and K. Waters); J. Harland Memorial Shield, Auckland Club; Commercial Hotel trophy, for tho best 20 shoots for first-year members, R. Fitzgibbon; N. Wilde trophy, for tho best .25 shoots drawn out of hat. R. Lynch; Eccles trophy, for the best self handicap aggregate, R. Lynch; Fisher Shield, for highest aggregate during the year, H. Foster. The evening terminated with a social gathering, among tho speakers being tho patron, Mr. A. J. Murdoch. AUCKLAND MINIATURE CLUB The Auckland Miniature Rifle Club held a meeting at its clubrooms, Ponsonby. There was a fair attendance and tho shooting was of a good standard, possibles being registered by C. E. Bush and R. T. Warnock. The best cards returned were as follows (possible 80): —C. E. Bush, SO, scr—Bo; R. T. Warnock, SO, scr—SO; B. Crocker, 70, scr—7o; G. G. Kelly, 70, scr—7o; J. Maucy, 70, .1—80; V. Dromgool, 78, 1—70; R. Fellows, 78, 5—80; J. E. Kelly, 77, scr—77; A. J. They shot off t-o decido tho winner, C. E. Bush winning by one point with a 70. The Tisdall handicap button was won by R. Fellows with two possibles, including handicap. A special match was fired last evening between teams representing tho Woodlands Rifle Club and tho Opotiki Territorial Platoon in tho Woodlands Hall. Tho results were:— .
