TAUMARUNUI CLUB

MEETING AT PAEKOA ' fields in jumping events / —— HURDLES AND STEEPLECHASE KEEN COMPETITION LIKELY BY ARCHED, Jumping events are almost invariably an interesting feature of the racing held at Paeroa each season and the Taumarunuj Club's meeting, to be held on Saturday and Monday, should be no exception, There is a hurdle race and a steeplechase each day and the acceptances received for Saturday's events indicate that competition is likely to be very keen. Tho Handicap Hurdles has attracted a field of 12. The useful Dark Marble, who won the Matamata Hack Cup, about li miles, at his final appearance last season is topweight. If produced tit he should not be without prospects, although the chances are that he may. not be quite ready after his absence from racing. Ivanapa has not raced since he finished second to Modern Mai,l in the Orakei Hurdles in June, but slight improvement upon that effort might make- him dangerous. Bellbroney as a Hurdler London has no recent form and failed to win last season, although he notched minor placings both over hurdles and country. Curlew was a winner at Ellerslie in J.une and is credited with having improved in condition since •racing unsuccessfully at Avondale recently, so .that he may be> one of the hardest to beat. Although his form did not reach expectations;. Race Whip registered a couple of minor placings last season, as he is only a five-year-old, there is time for him to make good. However, he has been defeated in his three starts this season and that is not very encouraging. A newcomer to the ranks of hurdlers :is Bellbroney and she ma.v lack experience, although her speed should take ]her a long way if she jumps at all well. .Rusty Jack and Little Musk have no jform and. are unknown quantities. Stormy Weather had six races on the flat last season without running into a place, but he has some pace and may have possibilities as a jumper. He is trained by A. J. Julian and belongs to the same family as Prince of Orange his dam being a half-sister to the Great Northern Hurdles winner. Survanna xind Overlap have not accomplished unything, but Hawthorn has run some creditable races and is a distinct possibility. Chance for Emancipation

The field for the Steeplechase Handicap is headed by the well-performed Valpeen, who has 12.4. At his best he would not find this weight prohibitive, but he suffered a lapse of form* in the winter and has been off the scene since pulling up very distressed in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie in June. As he is. trained in private, doubt exists regarding his condition and whether he can reproduce his former dash remains to be seen. Golden England is consistent and usually performs well on the course, but he also has been absent Bince contesting she Winter Steeplechase. Golden England's last victory was achieved when he won the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase at .Paeroa in March with 10.13 from Forest Glow and others. The racing he had over hurdles at 'Avondale recently has been beneficial to Emancipation and his fourth on the iiecond day indicated that be is close to i'orm. As he is equally as capable over country as hurdles. Emancipation appears to have excellent prospects, although it will not be to hia advantage ii; the track happens to be heavy. The Hiker is a dashing fencer who should be suited by the course £tiid may be very dangerous. At his l&sit start he finished third to Illuminagh and Emancipation in the Bay of Plenty Steeplechase at Tauranga in June. Semiarch has the best credentials of the others, most of whom have had very little experience with the exception of Bark Princess, who registered some minor placings last season.
