OBITUARY
MR. JOHN WELLS [bt telegraph OWN correspondent} WHJLNGABEI, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. John Wells, aged 86 years, of Hikurangi r one of the first white children born in the Far North. Mr. Wells was born, at Awanui and spent most of his youth in that district. Bfe was apprenticed to the shoemaking and saddlery trade, and later engaged in .bush-felling. Mr. •Wells was keenly interested in sport, and was a member of the Waipapakauxi Racing Club. He was associated with a number of the important public works of the Far North, including the construction of the first road between Awanui and Kaitaisi. Mr. Wells is survived by six sons and three daughters. SISTER JOSEPH [from our own correspondent] APIA, Sept. 17 The death has occurred at Moamoa of Sister Joseph at the age of 64 years. She was born in Fiji and was a daughter of the late Mr. J, B. Swann. The interment took place at Moamoa cemetery, the funeral service being conducted by Bishop Biarnand, assisted by the clergy. There was a large attendance of residents. Sister Joseph joined the Missionary Sisters of the Society of St. Mary 44 years ago, and did splendid work among the Saitnoiins, especially in Tutuila, where she established and carried on the mission school at Leone until it was taken over by the American Government. She subsequently came to Apia, where she continued her work at the convent school until overtaken by illness.
