FREEZING WORKS MEN
CONTROL IN SOUTH ISLAND UNION ORGANISATION BALLOT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHIIISTCHURCII. Wednesday It is announced by the secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Workers' Unjon, Mr. J. Kirkpatrick, that the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, has given an assurance that a ballot will be taken at the beginning of the coming season to settle the question of the method of organisation and control to be adopted in the South Island for the future Mr. Kirkpatrick said that some time ago the South Island Freezing Workers' and Related Trades Association took a straw vote of the workers from Picton to the Bluff and secured an overwhelming vote for the formation of the South Island union. As a result of the objections lodged by the old Otago Union, however, registration was not granted. As a result of the representations made to him the Minister had given an assurance that in order to settle the matter a ballot would be taken at the beginning of the coming season. Provision for such a ballot was made in the new legislation.
