AUCKLAND RETURNS NINE MONTHS' FIGURES RISE OF 25 PER CENT RECORD FOR SALES TAX Revenue collected from all sources by tho Customs Department at Auckland for the last nine months totalled £3,596,742, representing an increase of £705,374, or just over 25 per cent, over the figure of £2,891,368 for the same period last year. Tho total for September was £111,258, an increase of £59,345 over that for the same month of 1935, when the total was £351,913. The customs duties alone for the nine months, amounting to £2,299,536, show an increase of £401,452, or nearly 25$ per cent. The September figure, £261,290, is better by £25,632 than that of September last year, but falls short of the record provided in August, when the amount was £272,666. Motor spirit and tyre duties, taken together, have yielded £564,407, or £163,717 more, for the nine months, but the receipts for September, £56,686, while being an improvement over the £52,133 collected in August, and the £47,953 of last September, are considerably below the exceptional figure of £114,798 recorded last March. Tyre duty shows an increase of £233 over the nine mouths' period. Receipts From Sales Tax

The sales tax receipts for September, £76,445, break the record established in August, when they were £72,922, the next highest total being £72,445 in June, and the next £70,240 Inst November. Last September's figure was £57,934. The increase for the nine months is £118,002, or a little over 25 per cent. Excise on beer has returned £118,410 since the beginning of the year, an increase of £22,213. The collection for September was £10,837, as against the £10,368 collected in September of last year. Sales tax, September, totalled £95,100, and established a new record. The net customs total for the nine months of the current year exceeds the figure for the corresponding period of 1935 by £449,162. The figures for September, with those for the same month of 1935 given in parentheses, were as follows: —Net customs revenue, £283,601 (£227,827); motor spirit duty, £62,134 (£47,162); tyre tax, £1073 (2181); sales tax, £95,100 (£76,186); beer excise, £5751 (£4969).
