85TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

CAREER OF MR. C. W. BOYCE

One of the few surviving pioneen of Cambridge, Mr. Charles W. Boyce,, celebrates his 85th birthday to-day. He now lives in retirement, but was formerly one of the leading business men ot Cambridge. Born a; Favesham, Kent, in 1851, Mr. Boyc; was apprenticed in London as a cooper. lie sailed for New Zealand in the clipper Zealandia, which, reached Auckland in October, 1874, Hi* first trip to Cambridge was made bj stage coach, and the journey occupied; 16 hours. In 1876 Mr. Boyce returned to Auckland, and later was at Napier for a peiiod. There he married Mia Sarah Jane Beaumont, who died about three years ago. After short period! at different trades Mr. Boyce established a grocery business in Cambridge in 1884. lie managed the business until his retire aient 21 years ago. Mr. Bcyce was a member of the original town board and borough council. For 18 years he was a member of the school committee, being chairman for three years. He is one of the oldesl past masters of the Masonic Lodge in Cambridge, and he was a foundation member of the Cambridge Municipal Band. '
