THE EXPORT SEASON

SMALLER SHIPMENTS MADE ONLY TWO CLASSES HIGHER PORK AND CHILLED BEEF Further decreases in exports of all classes of meat, with the exception of chilled beef and pork, during the 11 months of the current season ended August 31, are shown by figures compiled bv the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Shipments of lamb were 8,335,550 carcases, against 8,704,689 carcases in the same period last year. A total of 193,291 quarters of frozen beef, compared with 316,189 quarters, was shipped, and 1,705,183 carcases of mutton, compared Avith 1,866,385 carcases. Boneless beef shipments declined from 262,368 bags to 218,296 hags. The increases were again in chilled beef, 132,362 quarters, 61,245 quarters, and pork, 611,241 carcases, against 573,894 carcases. Killings of stock for export this season to August 31, compare with the same period last season as follows:

HEMP AND TOW , CRADINCS IN AUGUST Gradings of hemp for export at New Zealand ports during August amounted to 1255 bales, an increase of 187 bales compared with August, 1935. The quantities graded at tho respective ports were: Auckland, 401 bales; Wellington, 573; Bluff, 281. The grading classes compare as follows with those of August, 1935: Good fair, nil (73); high fair, 324 (292); low fair, 330 (189); common, 319 (257); rejected, 277 (256); condemned, 5 (1). Tow gradings for tho month .were 206 bales, an increase of 39 bales compared with August, 1935. The grading classes compare as follows: —First grade, nil (3); second grade, 122 (46); third grade, 65 (116); condemned, 19 (2). MINING NEWS ARGO'S FOURTH DIVIDEND The Argo Gold Dredging Company, Limited (West Coast), has declared a dividend of Id a share, payable on September 21. This is the fourth distribution made by the company. The payment represents a distribution of £2OOO to shareholders and tho sum of £2OO has been placed to general reservo. GALATEA ESTATE HIGH PRICES FOR STEERS [FROM OUR OWN HAMILTON, Sunday An excellent winter has been experienced on tho Government's Galatea Estate, Bay of Plenty. The pastures aro in good heart, and the area of 22,000 acres is now carrying over 5000 head of cattle and 20,000 sheep. A line of 150 chilling steers was sold during the last week for £ll 10s a head, while another line of 100 steers intended for the chilling trade realised £l2 a head. Less than three months ago £8 10s a head was offered for the steers, but was declined. A purchase of 1500 store cattle has been made for the estato. HEREFORD BULLS OFFERED TOP PRICE 135 GUINEAS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] QISBORNE, Saturday A draft of 28 two-year Hereford bulls was auctioned yesterday on behalf of Messrs. Hutchinson Urothers. The animals averaged 70gns, ranging from 40gns to 1-lOgns, the top-priced bull going "to the Kioro Sheepfarming Company. Two others sold at 135gns to Mossrs, A. Kirkpatrick and W. D. Lysnar. Last year's average wag 50gns. YARDING AT POROTI [from our own correspondent] WHANGAItEI, Snturday The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Limited, held a successful sale at l'oroti yesterday. Tho attendance was good and the yarding well up to tho advertised number, which consisted chiefly of dairy stock. A total clearance was effected at full markot rates, competition for better sorts being keener than at recent sales.
