RAND IN MINIATURE

A REMARKABLE MODEL EMPIRE EXHIBITION PIECE [l-ROM our OWN cokrkspoxdkxt] JOHANNESBURG, August 4 A model of the whole of the Witwatersrand, which is being made for the Empire Exhibition in Johannesburg, will contain 200,000 Lilliputian buildings and structures, as well as tens of thousands of tinv trees. So exact will be the reproduction that individual houses will be recognisable. Fifty-seven feet front end to end, this fascinating model of the goldfields between Itandfontein and Springs is in natuiial colours and is on the scale of one in 5000, The material used is plaster of paris, mixed with chemicals designed to increase the durability. Infinite patience was needed in making the square yards of minute buildings, skilfully coloured. Among the features that are easily recognisable arc the Empire Exhibition ground*—although the >OO acres have been reduced to something like 4in. square—the Zoo Lake, the Witwntersrand University and the Hand Airport. By the time the exhibition opens almost a year of -work will have boon spent on the model.
