NATIVE PROTECTORATES

INCORPORATION IN UNION FARMERS DESIRE DELAY [from our own JOHANNESBURG, August 4 While recognising that the incorporation of the native protectorates into the Union is bound to come sooner or later the South African Agricultural Union considers it would bo inadvisable to precipitate tho matter before the prosperity of South African farmers has been re-established and set on a firm foundation. Representations to this effect have been made to the Prime Minister, General J. B. M. Hertzog. He pointed out, however, that the matter concerned important interests of the State which might have far-reaching effects for tho future wcll-beiug of South Africa, and where interests of such grave importance were affected the farmer could not reasonably e\()ect that his interests should receive consideration in preference to those of the State, Jn later representations the Agricultural Union stated that the South African markets, even under existing conditions, were heavily over-supplied with farm produce similar to that grown in the native territories, with the result that the farmers were finding it difficult to maintain their position.
