CONCERT AT CHATEAU

VARIED ENTERTAINMENTS [from our own correspondent] THE CHATEAU, Monday 111 winds at the Chateau by no means necessitate a cessation of good fun. Fair weather or foul, there is always a jolly element among the guests which makes the most of the social opportunities offered at this luxurious holiday playground, and guests who have at times been confined indoors by adverse conditions outside have had no opportunity for boredom. An orchostra is in constant attendance, several of the guests are talented pianists and singers, and if one does not caro for music and dancing there is always a game of bridge or a book by the fire to while away < the time. More strenuous and extremely popular is a very wild and exciting variety of hockey, played from a sitting position on the dance floor, with rolled newspapers as sticks and a rolled-up sock as ball. No blizzard could still the laughter that echoed through the Chateau when, in lieu of the skiing match, an inter-Dominion hockey test was held.

There is also a well-equipped cinema room at the Chateau, aud several splendid New Zealand scenic films were shown on Sunday afternoon to an obviously appreciative audience. Under the capable management of Messrs. J. W. Palmer and E. Maxwell, an excellent concert was staged on Sunday evening, rovealing much talent among the members of the various ski clubs. Prominent on the programme was a clever burlesque of the production of a motion picture, "Wild Nell, or Pet of the Plains," by members of the Tararua Tramping Club. Other items included an exhibition of tap dancing by Miss Jean Thomson, of Auckland, a humorous interlude by students of Victoria College, Wellington, a song by Miss Jean Breen and Mr. W. Mitchell, musical dialogues by Miss Joy Tennant and Mr. J. Young, pianoforte items by Mr. Eric Maxwell, and violin and novelty items by Mr. Alec Munro.
