ONEHUNGA SCOTS
The monthly social of the Onehunga Caledonian Society attracted a large gathering of Scottish people to the Orphans Hall ou Saturday evening. The chief, Mr. J. H. Preston, presided, supported by Mr. J. Meikle, chief of the Devonport Caledonian Society. Representatives of tho Otahuhu and Sandringham Societies were also present an.d, together with a strong contingent from Devonport, were ceremoniously piped in by tho Onehunga Society's official piper, Mr. J. Cowper. Reference was made by the chief to the recent death of Mr. W. Wakefield, late of Mangere, and a former chieftain of the society, all present standing in silence as a mark of respect to his memory. Scottish songs were contributed by the Society's choir under the leadership of Dr. James Kirkwood, followed by solos by Mrs. F. Ellis. A variety of Highland dances by Miss Mavis Ward, Miss P. Ferguson and Miss Hipkins evoked much applause. The chief of the Devonport Society, Mr. Meikle, created much amusement in his humorous response to the toast of the visitors. Members of the ladies' guild having served supper, the remainder of the evening was devoted to dancing to the music of the pipes and Mr. James Allen's orchestra.
