FIFTY YEARS AGO
DOGS IN SYMONDS STREET Dogs other than ilsntians apparently struck terror into the hearts of nervous, citizens half a century ago. An item in the New Zealand Hkkalp of September 1, ISB6, stated:— ''Owing to the repeated complaints as to dangerous mastiffs being at large in Upper Symonds Street, the police intend to make strict inquiries into the matter with a view to taking legal measures against the owners of the savage brutes." Another item in the same issue stated: — j "Some time ago, Dr. J- Logan Campbell determined on experimenting with tho cultivation of the olive tree and commenced! with planting some two acres at the lower part his One Tree Hill estate. These again were planted out over- some 20 acres and are now thriving capitally. of the trees already are 10 feet high.
