TRANSPORT BY-ELECTION
DEFAULTING RATEPAYERS VOTING TO BE EMPOWERED [BY TELEGRAPH SPECIAL REPORTER] §VELLIXCTOX, Monday Defaulting ratepayers will be eligible to vote at the'| forthcoming Auckland Transport Board by-election, as a result of legislation to be introduced in Parliament in the coming week by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. \V. E. Parry. In explaining the position, Mr. Parry said legislation was passed in 1932, and again in 1935, temporarily suspending the provisions which disqualify defaulting ratepayers from voting at local elections and polls. The legislation had since expired, but it had been brought under the notice of the Government that a large number of ratepayers in thfe Auckland district would be unreasonably disqualified at the forthcoming [Auckland Transport Board by-election? unless the provision was renewed. Consequently, added Mr. Parry, the Government had decided to make a further extension of 'the concession so as to give votes to those ratepayers who were not seriously in arrears with rates. The bill would be down as an urgent measure early in the week and put through all stages as quickly as possible. I •
